Cobbs Creek Foundation, TGR Learning Lab
The Cobbs Creek Foundation is leading the restoration of the historic Cobbs Creek Golf Course in West Philadelphia. This revitalization project includes reconstructing over three miles of creek and tributaries, developing acres of wetlands, fully restoring the original 18-hole course, and adding a new nine-hole course, a short course, a two-story driving range featuring a restaurant, pro shop, and a dedicated space for community events. Additionally, the project will include a youth education center.
As part of its commitment to youth education, the Cobbs Creek Foundation has partnered with the TGR Foundation (a Tiger Woods charity) to establish the TGR Learning Lab on the Cobbs Creek Campus, providing year-round STEM learning opportunities for local students.
Constructing the Learning Lab building presented unique challenges due to its location on a former golf course, requiring extensive sitework and utility installations. One significant hurdle was implementing a campus-wide underground electrical system while avoiding interference with the golf course greens. LF Driscoll/Perryman collaborated closely with PECO, the civil engineering team, and the design team to strategically position manholes, transformer vaults, and PECO modules to protect the greens. Utilizing drone technology, the team surveyed elevation changes and mapped the existing utilities to ensure precision during installation.
LF Driscoll/Perryman has collaborated with the design team and Cobbs Creek Foundation to address additional key elements, including the site’s electrical systems, a private cost sewer installation, and the addition of a force main. These efforts reflect a shared commitment to overcoming challenges and delivering this impactful project to a successful completion.
The revitalization of the Cobbs Creek Golf Course will serve as a cornerstone for community engagement, education, and opportunity, paving the way for a brighter future for West Philadelphia.
